Q:  How Do I Choose  A Martial Arts School for My Child?

A: Like anything else, you do your homework, ask questions and visit Martial Arts schools convenient to your home until you find one that offers the right program at the right time and price.

Once you’ve narrowed it down to these basics, you have the most important thing to consider...

  • How comfortable you feel entrusting your child to the instructors?
  • Learn about their history and qualifications.
  • A trip to a local sports equipment store and you will find that it’s very easy to purchase a “black belt”.
  • Talk to other parents of the school’s students, and ask plenty of questions.
  • Visit and watch classes. Notice how the instructors act with the children.
  • You are looking for instructors with plenty of patience.
  • Do the other students pay attention when the Instructor speaks?
  • Does the Instructor seem to have control over the group?
  • Ask how the School addresses self-control, conflict resolution and issues of respect with the children.
  • While it’s absolutely true that practicing a martial art can tame even the most aggressive child, it’s important to note that some Martial Arts schools, however, are less effective than others at emphasising the importance of self-discipline and respect for the opponent. So you should always talk to potential instructors and observe classes to see how aggression is handled.

Lastly, as in any sport, the most dangerous children are the ones who haven’t learned to control their own bodies and don’t know the rules yet. These things will come with instruction, at the Success4Life Junior Black Belt School, we make sure children are closely supervised during sparring, with special attention given to motor skill development, mental focusing attributes, and children’s inherent capabilities..

Q: What Are The Benefits Of My Child Learning Martial Arts At Success4Life Junior Black Belt School?

A: Firstly our highly qualified and patient Instructors have been practicing Martial Arts for many years and as well as being parents themselves, have many years experience in teaching children and the Junior Programmes offered by the Success4Life Junior Black Belt School have been specifically developed for different stages of a child’s development.

One of the things that parents appreciate about our classes is the improvement that they see in their child’s discipline and self-control. We have fun with the children but we also set clear limits and boundaries. We also make a point with the children that they must carry this behavior outside of the School into their school and home.

We teach children to protect themselves in a safe and supportive manner. Children are taught not only what to do, but when to use these skills. We don’t want our students to misuse this, so we work hard to ingrain a sense of responsibility with their training.

Martial Arts builds self confidence and teaches discipline which will provide a solid foundation from which your children will develop strong character. While studying the Martial Arts is fun, children will be learning important lessons in values and respect that will shape how they view the world around them. And even though we teach to avoid confrontations, if the need arises, your children can be secure in their knowledge of how to defend themselves from physical harm. This is the power derived from the Martial Arts. Martial Arts builds self-confidence. It is a physical and demanding sport. Children who participate and progress in the Martial Arts will develop a positive attitude that they can take with them to help accomplish other important tasks and face other challenges.

The Success4Life Junior Black Belt School is dedicated to making your children feel accepted as well as motivated. We focus on providing children with a positive and safe atmosphere where they can build their confidence, even after a bad day at school or playing a sport. It’s a place where they’ll find support when they feel down or discouraged. We are ready and able to give your children the additional support to face life’s challenges and stay on the right path. In addition to the structure you provide at home, Martial Arts also provides your child with discipline. This involves coming to class on time and following school rules and policy. It also concerns learning to respect themselves and others, which is an important goal that we strive to instill in our students.

Q: What Other Benefits Are There to My Child Learning A Martial Art?

A:The discipline that they learn helps them to stay focused and work hard to accomplish their goals.

Martial Arts is a tool that can help your children in other sports, as well as keeping them in shape and healthy. Many drills that we practice enhance skills they will need in other extracurricular activities. For example, proper balance and hand-eye coordination are skills that are essential in sports such as football, gymnastics and rugby.   Martial Arts training can give your children the competitive edge.

Martial Arts does not just teach chlidren how to defend themselves physically, but more importantly, how to avoid dangerous situations through different stages of awareness. Avoiding the situation rather than being in a physical confrontation is an important concept that instructors teach both indirectly and directly.

Through the Martial Arts, your children will learn many valuable lesson that will help them throughout their lives. The best thing about it is that it’s fun. They may not even realize that they are learning all these values.

It’s not only enjoyable for the children, it’s also enjoyable for you!. To watch your children learn new skills and watch them improve will fill you with pride. The values and lessons of Martial Arts can help your children grow confidently into adulthood, and becoming better equipped to handle the many situations that they will face in their life.

Q: My Child Lacks Confidence, How Will Doing a Martial Art Help?

A: Our belt grading system is one of the ingredients on building your child’s self confidence and as we prepare children to earn each belt, skill levels improves and confidence increases. Each belt presents a new challenge that your child will learn to meet and exceed. In between the belt grading system children are able to earn Life Skill badges, Effort Badges, Coloured Stars and other smaller goal awards.

Our existing parents tell us this gives their children an unshakable confidence that improves all areas of their lives. Their grades get better at school, they’re better behaved at home and at school and they gain the confidence to say NO to peer pressure.

Q: Do Your Instructors Hold Full Coaching Liability, a First Aid Qualification and Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Checking Status?

A: Yes, it is a prerequisite of our School that all our Instructors teaching children hold these qualifications, which are available to inspect upon request.

Q: Do You Have a Child Protection Policy In Place?

A: Yes we do and a copy is available at all of our Clubs upon request.

Q: Are Your Classes Broken Up By Age Groups?

A: Yes, we offer four separate Junior Programmes for children ranging from 4 years to 16 years to ensure that classes are specifically geared to the child’s age, mental and physical ability.

Q: Does My Child Need Previous Martial Arts Experience?

A: No, most of our new junior members have no previous experience. However, if your child does have experience in karate or some other martial art, of course they are also welcome. We cater for children of all abilities.

Q: My Child Has Special Needs, Can You Cater For This?

A: The martial arts provide an opportunity to strengthen all of your child’s body - including the brain.

Using mind-body disciplines, martial arts seems to be able to address the short attention spans of today’s children, even those diagnosed with such conditions as Attention Deficit Disorder.

The Instructor will discuss your child’s needs with you in detail in any event before any classes are commenced.

Q: I have a boy and a girl – are there any gender issues with my children practicing a Martial Art?

A: Absolutely not!  Because martial arts emphasize technique over power, the playing field is more level when compared to many other sports according to some experts. We have many junior girls and boys practicing and they are all “students” regardless of gender.

Q: Am I Able To Stay and Watch My Child Train?

A: Absolutely, You are more than welcome to observe any of our classes and we see this as important, especially in the early stages so that you can see what your child is learning to enable you to help and encourage him/her to continue.

Q: Can My Child Try Some Classes To See If They Like It?

A: Of Course! We recommend all Junior students come along and do a weeks FREE trial lessons for orientation purposes to see if they like it.

Q: When and How Can My Child Start?

A: At the Success4Life Junior Black Belt School we feel it is important for both us and your child, to have some background information and if you like “get to know” your Child a little before they enroll on one of our Junior Programmes.  To achieve this we like to arrange a short meeting with you and your child, where you can tell us anything you feel we should know, we can ascertain what you would like your child to achieve from the Programme and what we can offer and generally ensure that any concerns or queries you may have are answered.

At Success4Life Junior Black Belt School it is our aim to provide the best possible Martial Arts Instruction to our junior students as well as care for their wellbeing and growth whilst they are with us. Once we have had this meeting and you are happy to enroll your child into one of our four Junior Programmes, your Child can start at any time in their specific Junior Programme scheduled classes.

Q: How Coordinated And Physically Fit Does My Child Have To Be To Practice Martial Arts?

A: Most children come to the martial arts in order to become more coordinated and physically fit.

So the brief answer is, “not very”.

Q: How Risky Is Martial Arts?

A: With any physical activity, there is a risk of injury, whether its playing football, rugby, gymnastics or martial arts training and by its very physical nature Martial Arts is no different. However, our School has an outstanding safety record because we go to great lengths to ensure the safety of our junior students.

Q: How Old Does My Child Have To Be To Start Training?

A: Our very first junior programme is the “Mini Masters” Programme and caters for children between the ages of 4 and 6.

Q: Will Martial Arts Training Make My Child Too Aggressive?

A: Children learn that martial arts are not acts of violence, but the art of how to handle themselves in a problematic situation. Aggression will be channeled into assertiveness to increase a child’s self esteem and build discipline and character.

Q: My Child Is Already Involved In Enough Activities. Why Should I Consider Involving Her/Him In A Martial Arts Program?

A: Many children are already involved in activities outside of school, such as football, rugby, gymnastics, and the like. The strategies and positive mindsets that are conveyed through the martial arts can prove to be beneficial to children’s performance in all other activities.

More importantly, martial arts training will prove to strengthen the mind and the body, and will teach children skills that may be necessary to help them avoid harmful situations, or escape from negative situations that may fall upon them.

Q: What’s The Point Of Playing Games In Class?

A: Playing games within a class ensures that the classes remain fun for the children, whilst at the same time developing coordination, teamwork, sportsmanshnip and self confidence.

Q: What Should I Do If My Child Wants To Give Up?

A: There will come a time when your child will say, “I’m too tired to go to class today.” This is a critical point in your child’s training and you should encourage them to follow through and have a “never give up” attitude. While the martial arts are an enjoyable and very worthwhile activity for children, it should be recognized that progress takes consistent class attendance as well as some practice and support from the family - your child can’t drive him/herself to class.

Don’t be concerned about “pushing your child.” Children wouldn’t go to school, brush their teeth or clean their room if you didn’t “push them” a little. There’s a big difference between helping a child follow through on an agreed-upon goal and forcing them to participate – you know your child the best and will be able to determine how best to proceed should this come up.

Q: How Can I Motivate My Child To Continue?

A: It’s realistic to expect a child to resist his/her commitment, eventually. Most parents understand that this is a natural response, but should not allow this temporary attitude to lead to giving up.

Giving up can quickly become a bad habit. Facing these types of challenges is an inherent part of martial arts training – and indeed life.

Instructors can help, but parents are primarily responsible for instilling a “not giving up” attitude in their children. Honoring one’s commitments is the very foundation of setting goals and achieving them.

Giving up only leads to underperformance and failure. The world is full of great starters.

Teach your child the skills to set goals and see them through to their completion, however, and he/she will be one of the rare and successful finishers in the world and we at Success4Life Junior Black Belt School will do all we can to help provide your child with the necessary skills for success in life.

Q: My Child Has Trained At Another School. Can They Start At The Level They Left The Last School Or Will They Have to Start Again?

A: Every style of martial arts is different. The perspective should be that they are not starting again but are learning a new and different style. Whatever your child has learned he/she will take that with them wherever they go and it will help your child succeed.

We have had many Junior Black Belts that have come to our School to train over the years that put on white belts to learn something different.

Q: Are There Any Limits To The Classes My Child Can Attend?

A: No, your child should aim to come to every class within their respective Club's Junior Program's schedule.

The more classes your child can attend, the better value for money you get and the sooner their skills progress..

Q: What About The Uniform?

A: There are specific uniforms for each Junior Program and your child gets a FREE uniform upon joining.

Q: Is There An Initial Joining And Membership Fee?

A: Yes there is an Initial Joining Fee and an Annual Membership Fee to pay. The first year's membership is included FREE within the initial Joining Fee when you sign your child up for one of our Junior Programs.

Q: How Do You Collect Your Lesson Fees?

A: The first month’s Lesson Fees are paid up front by cash or cheque after which Lesson Fees are collected on a monthly basis via Standing Order, this is a simple and effective method to guarantee your child’s Lesson Fees are paid on time each month, and you have full control of your payments.

We have adopted the Standing Order payment system as a means to maintain a positive and excellent Instructor/junior student relationship and to ensure that your child is able to attend all the classes available within their specified Programme without financial or business issues interfering with your child’s training and that relationship. Standing Order payments makes the whole process easier because it guarantees that your child’s Lesson Fees are paid in a timely fashion each month, without any problems.

You can forget about paying for classes and concentrate on allowing your child to learn and grow and we can concentrate on teaching your child. Please see individual club Instructors for other payment methods.

Q: Are Family Discounts Available for two or more Children?

A: Yes, we actively encourage families to train together and make it very affordable for the whole family to do – please ask the Instructor for details.
